Putting Your Families Health First At One Stop Doctor

As a parent your children are always your main priority and when they fall ill or hurt themselves you always want the best care for them. I know from previous experience I have sometimes had to wait a day or two for a GP appointment and getting a dentist appointment is like gold dust, our last NHS appointment was delayed two times because of funding. Luckily for us there is a pioneering new healthcare clinic ‘The One Stop Doctor’ that has recently launched in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire that is putting the needs of families at the heart of their quick and friendly services. The clinic is stunning, more like a five star hotel and the staff are all so welcoming and friendly.

One Stop Doctors in Hemel Hempstead is open 365 days a year from early morning to late evening with a full complement of paediatric services all under one roof. This includes same-day appointments with GPs and dentists who will be able to offer immediate relief for worrying mums and dads whose children are unwell, perhaps with persistent fevers, colds, chesty coughs or toothache. There’s also a private pharmacy that can provide commonly needed drugs straight away.

Only a couple of weeks ago Archie had a high temperature and his little heart was beating quite fast, which is a common symptom of a fever. Greg thought we should take him to A & E but I called the One Stop Doctor for a late night appointment which was available with no problem at all.

The team of multi-disciplinary health professionals at the clinic are highly experienced in treating common childhood conditions from feeding difficulties in babies and toddlers through to providing allergy testing and advice, alongside treatment for asthma and access to the full range of childhood vaccinations and immunisations. This is fantastic as in our area we were not offered the BCG and I paid privately for both Oscar and Archie to be immunised but had to travel into London. Now having a clinic so local to us is a god send!

One Stop Doctors is one of a number of outlets nationwide that offers the Mummy MOT, a one-hour assessment which gives a thorough examination of mum’s pelvic floor strength and tummy gap – to assess any physical problems that have arisen from pregnancy and birth. The Mummy MOT can also help mums years after childbirth with their pelvic floor strength. The clinic is also putting together special Mother and Baby packages for both expectant mothers and mothers of young children. No more travelling all the way into London for Mother and Baby services!

The specialist dental team are also experts in orthodontics and oral health with a variety of teeth-straightening options for young ones and appointments at convenient times for parents.

The clinic has invested heavily in the latest diagnostic imaging machinery including advanced MRI scanning equipment, CT, ultrasound and digital X-ray, which means that One Stop Doctors is able to offer an on-site urgent care and fracture clinic. We were at a birthday party about six weeks ago and Oscar’s friend fell off a swing and her parents on a Friday night at 7pm got an X-Ray appointment straight away instead of waiting for hours in a busy Friday night A & E department. She was then plastered straight away.

One Stop Doctors is fully accredited by all major regulators and private medical insurance companies, such as Bupa, Aviva and Cigna so it’s easy to pay, and is approved by the Care Quality Commission. However, what makes this pioneering clinic truly unique is its one-of-a-kind membership plan. This allows families to join for only £65 a month and gives them the ability to spread the cost of treatment in a payment plan, with no interest or credit agreement and provides guaranteed same-day GP appointments for any number of children aged 21 and under. This means that parents can spread the cost of healthcare for their children, making the very best private healthcare accessible and affordable.

Keep Your Family Happy & Healthy!

With the ability for parents to book appointments directly, and the large amount of free parking available to patients right outside the clinic, many of the usual stresses of visiting a medical establishment with children are taken away.

Your Baby’s First 1000 days

1000 days is 2 years and 9 months to be precise. 1000 days from the date of conception will take you right up to your baby’s second birthday. It sounds like such a long time but those days pass like a blink of an eye. Archie is now almost 13 months old and I honestly do not know where the time has gone, it only feels like yesterday that we brought him home from hospital and started life as a family of four. These first 1000 days are so important to give the right amount of nutrition and protein to your baby as it is proven during this crucial period it has a profound impact on your baby’s growth and development and is the foundation for their cells, muscles, brain and other tissues. Protein and nutrition is just so important to shape your baby’s whole future and SMA  nutrition is working with media Doctor Ellie Cannon, to further educate parents all about nutrition in those important first 1000 days.

From the moment of conception your body is performing the most amazing and crucial job it will ever do. Making sure you are having a healthy and eating a nutritious diet when you are pregnant and taking the right supplements is vital. This will help to ensure that your baby gets the correct micronutrients he/she needs to avoid deficiency in early life. This is something I personally took very seriously and read up on good healthy meals and the best supplements that were packed full of all the nutrients that my baby needed. After all you only have one chance to get it right!

I decided early on that I wanted to breastfeed Archie as I had done it with Oscar for the first six months. With Oscar it wasn’t a great experience but I stuck with it as obviously my milk is tailored to him and contained all of the right protein and nutrients he needed. With Archie, again I found it difficult and ended up expressing from when he was 1 month up until he was 6 months. I only did this as he lost a bit of wait at his 5 day check and was admitted to A & E and by expressing it was my way of making sure I knew exactly what he was consuming, more for piece of mind than anything else. Obviously we all know that breast is best and it is tailored to your baby’s specific needs. I am in no way saying bottle feeding is bad but it was my personal preference to breastfeed for the first 6 months, everyone is different. The protein level in your breast milk amazingly changes as your baby grows, resulting in your baby getting exactly  the right quality and quantity of protein they need to help them grow at a steady rate. This changing protein composition which can only be found in breast milk, can help to ensure your baby follows the appropriate rate of growth, which decreases their chances of being overweight or obese in later life, and sets a solid foundation for life. I know what your thinking… the human body is just amazing, right?

At 6 months I changed Archie to formula and also started weaning as he was a little hungry baby. Obviously being able to prepare him healthy and nutritious meals made it easy for him to get all the goodness and protein he needed.

Breast feeding feels like so long ago now and when I look at Archie and Oscar it does make me feel sad that time passes so fast. I think when Oscar was a baby I didn’t notice it as much as I always thought we would have another baby but now we have had Archie and we have decided that two children is enough I often find myself looking through my camera roll on my phone and catching a glimpse of Archie’s newborn photos and I do think to myself; I will never have a newborn again, I will never be pregnant again and now Archie is crawling around he isn’t a tiny baby any more. This does scare me a bit. I have also been so much more relaxed about his development. When Oscar was a baby I was almost willing him on to sit up, roll over, crawl and walk and with Archie I was so much more laid back and just wanted him to stay a baby for as long as possible.

SMA have just launched the most amazing campaign that aims to educate pregnant women and mums about the importance of the first 1,000 days of a baby’s life. I think some Mum’s just don’t realise how crucial this time period is and now thanks to SMA you can head over to their website where you can read up on all the information you will need or even log on to their live chat or call the helpline to ask any questions you may have.

Alternatively please comment below and leave your questions on protein and early life nutrition during the first 1,000 days. Not all questions can be answered but I will be following up with another post shortly where Dr Ellie Cannon will have the answers to you questions which I hope you will find really helpful!
