My Separation Anxiety

Last week Archie turned 3! I can’t quite believe it and just don’t know where the time has gone. Being the second and last child I have definitely noticed more anxiety this time around watching him growing up and I just don’t want to let him go. He is so ready to start nursery and was meant to start next week but I have delayed it a term, as the time got nearer my anxiety went through the roof. He is around children a lot during the week as we go to two toddler groups, a Playball class and his swimming lesson so I know he’s not particularly missing out on anything by staying at home with me. He also needs to be potty trained to start at the nursery as we haven’t quite mastered that yet. I’m not going to lie there is a part of me that just wants him to start next September and just do one full year in nursery before reception.

Looking back Oscar didn’t go to nursery until he was three either, he started nursery on the September after his third birthday going a few mornings a week and did a year in nursery before going into reception. Again we went to lots of classes so he had lots of child interaction. Even now as Oscar’s school holidays draw to a close and he goes back to school next week I start to dread it, as I love having him at home with us and really enjoy the school holidays. During the week he has such a long school day (8.20-4.15) and then after school clubs, reading, piano practice and homework so we don’t have a lot of time during the week to do anything fun. So we make the most of the weekends and holidays.

I think in my crazy mind I think that once Archie starts nursery and he does a couple of mornings which will then lead into days and then suddenly he will be at full time school that I just want to keep him at home for as long as possible as once he starts that’s it. He’s my sidekick and goes everywhere with me so suddenly having free time to myself will be lovely but very strange. My Mother In Law said to me years ago that your children are only lent to you and then they grow up and fly the nest, I get that but it scares my how quick the time goes, Oscar is almost 8 and I wish life would just slow down.

I 100% have an issue with leaving the boys, Oscar was only left once overnight when he was 2 weeks old as it was our best friend’s wedding (he was 3 weeks early) and since then I’ve never had a night apart from either of them. This year my brother is getting married and I was invited on the hen do to Marbella. Now instantly I wanted to go, sit in the sun and have fun with the girls and then my anxiety kicked in. Leaving the boys behind even though I know they would have a fun weekend with Greg and be totally fine, the thought of being in a different country to them made me say no. Even now there is a part of my brain that says don’t be so stupid, go and enjoy yourself! Greg’s been away with his friends loads since we had children and its great to have time just being you!

I know a lot of the problems go back to when Oscar was born and he was poorly and then when he was a few weeks old he couldn’t breathe and I had to clear his airways. It scared me how quickly things can go wrong and since then have always felt safer when they are with us. Which is crazy I know.

Even me reading this post back now and I think ‘crazy lady’ and can see how I am missing out on doing certain things/trips which would be fun. But for now I just want to enjoy our boys whilst they are still young. After all when they are all grown up I will have plenty of time to do other things.

Getting Some Baby Bits Organised

Last week Oscar’s new chest of draws arrived from Next that match his cabin bed so we could move the changing unit/draws he had from Mamas and Papas upstairs ready for when the baby comes. When Oscar got home from school we built the draws together, which he really enjoyed. One piece of wood was damaged and I rang Next customer services and I was so impressed as they sent a new bit out with no fuss at all and it arrived the very next day!

I also brought a wooden clothes rail from Izziwotnot as we have left the original nursery wardrobe in Oscar’s room for the time being as we are planning to move next year. The clothes rail is really cute and at only £34.99 was a real bargain. I also picked up a wicker basket to store nappies in which I have put on the shelf at the bottom of the rail. I have started buying a packet of nappies every other week on our shopping so we are stocked up. I also have brought the new Johnson’s baby first touch wipes as they are suitable for newborns.

I kept my changing mat from when we had Oscar, so put it through the wash and it looks as good as new. I have brought a Stokke Sleepi mini cot and am very excited to be receiving a shnuggle moses basket in a few weeks to review. I have picked neutral colours as we don’t know the sex of the baby. I picked up a gorgeous lampshade from Mamas and Papas and have fitted a Gro-Light attachment (full review and competition on the blog tomorrow).

My Mum and Dad kindly brought us our car seat and isofix base which I love the material pattern. We choose the Maxi-Cosi pebble in modern black and the FamilyFix base. I saved a whooping £87.55 as I found it on simplybaby.co.uk for £237.45 using a 5% off discount for liking them on facebook too. In Mothercare it is currently £325.00.

I am looking forward to the Baby Show next week as it’s my first one I will have been to pregnant. I can’t wait to see what is available and want to look and compare all of the different pushchairs and baby carriers.

Putting A Shopping List Of Baby Bits Together!

Since I was pregnant with Oscar five years ago the world of baby and nursery products has changed dramatically! When I had Oscar I brought so many bits and pieces (most you don’t really need) and as we have now passed the twenty weeks stage I have been putting a list together of things we need to get as I am trying to be really organised especially being due around Christmas.

We have our nursery furniture that was from Mama’s and Papa’s and has lasted really well and Oscar is now in a cabin bed so I only need to get him a chest of draws then I can use the changing unit/draws for the baby. Some of the things I have come across have shocked me, like the Fisher Price bouncer with Ipad holder. I was pleased to read this had been discontinued! There are some products available that I really love the look of and can make life a little easier for you. The Tommee Tippee perfect prep machine looks fab and I have had friends that have used it and they absolutely rave about it. Also I will defiantly be getting a video baby monitor this time as these weren’t around five years ago and look really great.

Another major difference when browsing the baby clothes is there are so many cuter boys clothes available now. As we don’t know what we are having I have brought a few neutral bits. I am loving star patterns and also brought some adorable giraffe printed baby grows from Mothercare plus I like the idea of rainbow prints for our little rainbow baby. I won’t be buying to much as I did this last time then when Oscar was born had loads of neutral clothes still on hangers as family and friends brought him so many lovely boy outfits. I was surprised in Next they have a tiny range of unisex new baby clothes which made me think maybe lots of people find out the sex of their baby now? To be honest I would love to find out but Greg doesn’t want to so I will just have to wait for the surprise!

There are also so many great looking pushchair/travel systems available now from fun and quirky designs from Cosatto, really modern designs from Quinny and I am still drawn back to Bugaboo has I had one with Oscar and it was great. To many to choose from makes the decision even harder. I am going to wait until the Baby Show in October to have a thorough look at them all. We have a Stokke mini sleepi cot from before too which I found making going from a moses basket to a big cot much easier. I have brought new white bedding and bumpers already, let’s see how long I can keep them clean this time.

I had a Silver Cross car seat with Oscar but don’t have it any more so have been looking at the Maxi-Cosi pebble and with my car now I can have an isofix base which makes getting the car seat in and out of the car so much easier, especially after a C-section.

Decisions, decisions all very exciting though!
