Putting Your Families Health First At One Stop Doctor

As a parent your children are always your main priority and when they fall ill or hurt themselves you always want the best care for them. I know from previous experience I have sometimes had to wait a day or two for a GP appointment and getting a dentist appointment is like gold dust, our last NHS appointment was delayed two times because of funding. Luckily for us there is a pioneering new healthcare clinic ‘The One Stop Doctor’ that has recently launched in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire that is putting the needs of families at the heart of their quick and friendly services. The clinic is stunning, more like a five star hotel and the staff are all so welcoming and friendly.

One Stop Doctors in Hemel Hempstead is open 365 days a year from early morning to late evening with a full complement of paediatric services all under one roof. This includes same-day appointments with GPs and dentists who will be able to offer immediate relief for worrying mums and dads whose children are unwell, perhaps with persistent fevers, colds, chesty coughs or toothache. There’s also a private pharmacy that can provide commonly needed drugs straight away.

Only a couple of weeks ago Archie had a high temperature and his little heart was beating quite fast, which is a common symptom of a fever. Greg thought we should take him to A & E but I called the One Stop Doctor for a late night appointment which was available with no problem at all.

The team of multi-disciplinary health professionals at the clinic are highly experienced in treating common childhood conditions from feeding difficulties in babies and toddlers through to providing allergy testing and advice, alongside treatment for asthma and access to the full range of childhood vaccinations and immunisations. This is fantastic as in our area we were not offered the BCG and I paid privately for both Oscar and Archie to be immunised but had to travel into London. Now having a clinic so local to us is a god send!

One Stop Doctors is one of a number of outlets nationwide that offers the Mummy MOT, a one-hour assessment which gives a thorough examination of mum’s pelvic floor strength and tummy gap – to assess any physical problems that have arisen from pregnancy and birth. The Mummy MOT can also help mums years after childbirth with their pelvic floor strength. The clinic is also putting together special Mother and Baby packages for both expectant mothers and mothers of young children. No more travelling all the way into London for Mother and Baby services!

The specialist dental team are also experts in orthodontics and oral health with a variety of teeth-straightening options for young ones and appointments at convenient times for parents.

The clinic has invested heavily in the latest diagnostic imaging machinery including advanced MRI scanning equipment, CT, ultrasound and digital X-ray, which means that One Stop Doctors is able to offer an on-site urgent care and fracture clinic. We were at a birthday party about six weeks ago and Oscar’s friend fell off a swing and her parents on a Friday night at 7pm got an X-Ray appointment straight away instead of waiting for hours in a busy Friday night A & E department. She was then plastered straight away.

One Stop Doctors is fully accredited by all major regulators and private medical insurance companies, such as Bupa, Aviva and Cigna so it’s easy to pay, and is approved by the Care Quality Commission. However, what makes this pioneering clinic truly unique is its one-of-a-kind membership plan. This allows families to join for only £65 a month and gives them the ability to spread the cost of treatment in a payment plan, with no interest or credit agreement and provides guaranteed same-day GP appointments for any number of children aged 21 and under. This means that parents can spread the cost of healthcare for their children, making the very best private healthcare accessible and affordable.

Keep Your Family Happy & Healthy!

With the ability for parents to book appointments directly, and the large amount of free parking available to patients right outside the clinic, many of the usual stresses of visiting a medical establishment with children are taken away.

For more information and to book an appointment visit www.onestopdoctors.co.uk or call 0800 852 1234.

The New Baby Bath Range From HIPP

When I first heard about the new baby bath range from HIPP I was excited and intrigued to try it out on Archie. To be honest I have been loyal to the same baby bath brand since Oscar was a baby and have never used anything different. The HIPP baby bath range is hyper allergenic and suitable for sensitive skin and the range comprises of a baby bath wash, a baby shampoo, baby bath bubbles and also a really fun children’s foaming hand wash. The whole range has been put together by baby skincare experts and every product has a no tears formula.

I was totally shocked when the most beautiful hamper of bath time goodies arrived for Archie. As well as the new baby bath range from HIPP there was also a beautiful towel and dressing gown with Archie’s name on it and lots of Bath toys for the boys to play with. Oscar instantly got the toys out the box and we couldn’t wait until bathtime.

Bath time arrived and I ran the bath with the HIPP good night baby bath and it made some nice bubbles for the boys to play with and it also smelt absolutely amazing too. We played with the bath animals and the letters which Oscar loved and we practised his spellings on the bathroom tiles with them. Archie liked chewing on them.

The boys played in the bath for forty five minutes and had so much fun. I think bath time is the boys favourite part of the day as they get to play together and spend some quality time having fun, I think they really miss each other when Oscar is at school. So lets get down to the washing part. Firstly I shampooed their hair and honestly I could not believe how soft it left their hair. Some shampoos can really feel like it has left behind a sticky film and you can still feel the product even when you’ve washed it out but with the HIPP shampoo you felt nothing but soft hair, it also smells great too.

The baby bath head to toe wash smells equally as amazing and also left the boys looking and smelling squeaky clean. The bottle having a pump action top is also really easy to get the soap out when you have got wet soapy hands. There is nothing worse than not being able to open a bottle because your hands are wet and soapy. In the past I’ve had to use my teeth which as you can imagine didn’t taste great! After the bath both Oscar and Archie smelt amazing and Archie enjoyed snuggling into his nice new towel and then getting into his pyjamas and comfy dressing gown.

Last but not least is the foaming hand wash which comes in the sweetest duck bottle. It is BPA free, free from and ultra sensitive. Another thing which is great about this product is that you don’t have to keep buying the bottle as a packet refill of the hand wash is available too.

So most importantly have I been converted….. and the answer is a big YES. I truly love the range and everything about it. The smell is amazing and they leave the boys hair and skin feeling super soft. I would really recommend giving the range ago. I bet you convert to HIPP too!

Disclaimer: We were sent the above HIPP bath time range and bath time kit for the purpose of this review. However I absolutely love the products and my reviews are completely honest and my own!

Share Your Ghastro Ghoul or Noro Story To Win A Break To Legoland

Norovirus causes diarrhoea and vomiting and is one of the most common stomach bugs in the UK. As a Mummy to two boys Norovirus is a nightmare! Archie is only 15 months and touch wood we have swerved it so far but Oscar has had it a few times over the last few years. One particular that time that I will always remember was when Oscar was 4 and I had just been for my 20 week scan as I was pregnant with Archie. Oscar had had a fun afternoon playing in the playground as we had met his Nanny for lunch afterwards for lunch. On the way home Oscar said he didn’t feel very well and that he had a tummy ache. I just thought he needed the toilet and told him we would be home in 5 minutes and not to worry. We were literally a couple of minutes from home and Oscar was sick, he was so upset that he had been sick and also worried that he had ruined his car seat. Seeing your little one so upset when they are ill is awful, you just want to switch places with them. Luckily when we arrived home Daddy was there and as it was a warm Summer’s day I took off Oscar’s shorts and tshirt and Daddy lifted him upstairs to give him a shower and get him cleaned up and in fresh clothes. After taking the car seat out of the car and putting the covers in the wash Oscar was in fresh clothes and still feeling really unwell. We gave him plenty of fluid and snuggled on the sofa to watch a DVD.

Dioralyte Family

Within a couple of hours the diarrhoea set in and I Googled what the best remedies were to treat it and rehydrate Oscar as I knew this was really important and Dioralyte came up as the number 1 selling rehydration therapy. I sent Greg out to get some Dioralyte from the chemist.  Dioralyte provides the right balance of mineral salts and water to combat dehydration and rehydrates better than plain water, fruit juice or fizzy drinks and contains essential electrolytes (mineral salts) and works by replacing fluids and body salts lost as a result of acute diarrhoea. By the next morning Oscar was feeling much better and it is amazing how quickly children bounce back after an illness and he very much enjoyed having 48 hours off of school to recover and play! Annoyingly after a day I came down with it as well, which was awful as being pregnant I couldn’t take a thing, only drink loads of water and pray that Oscar didn’t get it back again from me as obviously he was off of school at home with me. Luckily we both recovered after a few days.

You can have a look on the Dioralyte website and if anyone in your family is suffering from sickness or diarrhoea you can find the right product for you to get rid of it as quick as possible. In the range are:

DioraleZe

DioraleZe is a product which can stop the symptoms of diarrhoea in just one dose, it contains Loperamide Hydrochloride, which has an exceptionally rapid onset of action compared with other anti-diarrhoeal drugs. DioraleZe works by slowing down muscle movements in the gut which leads to more water being absorbed from stools. The stools then become firmer and are passed less frequently. NHS guidance recommends taking oral rehydration sachets and anti-diarrhoeal medication as one of the ways in which you can help to treat diarrhoea – taking DioralyteTM and DioraleZe together can help aid a faster recovery time. DioraleZe 2mg capsules RRP £3.49 for 6 capsules and are available from Boots, Asda, Superdrug and independent pharmacies.

Dioralyte

Dioralyte is the number one selling rehydration therapy. It is clinically proven to treat dehydration faster and more effectively than plain water, fruit juice or fizzy drinks, it works by replacing fluids and body salts lost as a result of acute diarrhoea.

Dioralyte comes in three different flavours:

• Blackcurrant

• Citrus

• Natural Dioralyte is suitable from 2 years.

Dioralyte Relief

Dioralyte Relief has a unique formula which reduces the duration of diarrhoea and the time taken to return to normal drinking and eating, thanks to the rice powder. It also treats dehydration faster and more effectively than plain water, fruit juice or fizzy drinks by replacing essential electrolytes (mineral salts) and water – just what your body needs to help you rehydrate and start feeling better. Dioralyte Relief is available in blackcurrant and raspberry flavours. Dioralyte Relief is suitable from 2 years.

I would love for you to share your Ghastro Goul or Noro Story of when somebody in your family was struck by either the Norovirus or Rotavirus. By sharing your story you will be entered in my competition to win an amazing family mini break (2 adults and 2 children) to Legoland Windsor, including centrally located hotel accommodation for one night and tickets to Legoland worth over £560! We went to Legoland ourselves last week and it is amazing! Competition closes Monday 16th May 2016 at 11am.

Your Baby’s First 1000 days

1000 days is 2 years and 9 months to be precise. 1000 days from the date of conception will take you right up to your baby’s second birthday. It sounds like such a long time but those days pass like a blink of an eye. Archie is now almost 13 months old and I honestly do not know where the time has gone, it only feels like yesterday that we brought him home from hospital and started life as a family of four. These first 1000 days are so important to give the right amount of nutrition and protein to your baby as it is proven during this crucial period it has a profound impact on your baby’s growth and development and is the foundation for their cells, muscles, brain and other tissues. Protein and nutrition is just so important to shape your baby’s whole future and SMA  nutrition is working with media Doctor Ellie Cannon, to further educate parents all about nutrition in those important first 1000 days.

From the moment of conception your body is performing the most amazing and crucial job it will ever do. Making sure you are having a healthy and eating a nutritious diet when you are pregnant and taking the right supplements is vital. This will help to ensure that your baby gets the correct micronutrients he/she needs to avoid deficiency in early life. This is something I personally took very seriously and read up on good healthy meals and the best supplements that were packed full of all the nutrients that my baby needed. After all you only have one chance to get it right!

I decided early on that I wanted to breastfeed Archie as I had done it with Oscar for the first six months. With Oscar it wasn’t a great experience but I stuck with it as obviously my milk is tailored to him and contained all of the right protein and nutrients he needed. With Archie, again I found it difficult and ended up expressing from when he was 1 month up until he was 6 months. I only did this as he lost a bit of wait at his 5 day check and was admitted to A & E and by expressing it was my way of making sure I knew exactly what he was consuming, more for piece of mind than anything else. Obviously we all know that breast is best and it is tailored to your baby’s specific needs. I am in no way saying bottle feeding is bad but it was my personal preference to breastfeed for the first 6 months, everyone is different. The protein level in your breast milk amazingly changes as your baby grows, resulting in your baby getting exactly  the right quality and quantity of protein they need to help them grow at a steady rate. This changing protein composition which can only be found in breast milk, can help to ensure your baby follows the appropriate rate of growth, which decreases their chances of being overweight or obese in later life, and sets a solid foundation for life. I know what your thinking… the human body is just amazing, right?

At 6 months I changed Archie to formula and also started weaning as he was a little hungry baby. Obviously being able to prepare him healthy and nutritious meals made it easy for him to get all the goodness and protein he needed.

Breast feeding feels like so long ago now and when I look at Archie and Oscar it does make me feel sad that time passes so fast. I think when Oscar was a baby I didn’t notice it as much as I always thought we would have another baby but now we have had Archie and we have decided that two children is enough I often find myself looking through my camera roll on my phone and catching a glimpse of Archie’s newborn photos and I do think to myself; I will never have a newborn again, I will never be pregnant again and now Archie is crawling around he isn’t a tiny baby any more. This does scare me a bit. I have also been so much more relaxed about his development. When Oscar was a baby I was almost willing him on to sit up, roll over, crawl and walk and with Archie I was so much more laid back and just wanted him to stay a baby for as long as possible.

SMA have just launched the most amazing campaign that aims to educate pregnant women and mums about the importance of the first 1,000 days of a baby’s life. I think some Mum’s just don’t realise how crucial this time period is and now thanks to SMA you can head over to their website where you can read up on all the information you will need or even log on to their live chat or call the helpline to ask any questions you may have.

Alternatively please comment below and leave your questions on protein and early life nutrition during the first 1,000 days. Not all questions can be answered but I will be following up with another post shortly where Dr Ellie Cannon will have the answers to you questions which I hope you will find really helpful!

The Power Of Plants – With Flora #PoweredByPlants

Yesterday morning Oscar, Archie and I drove into London to attend a special breakfast with Flora. When I was invited to the breakfast I knew straight away that it was something I wanted to take Oscar along to as Flora has pledged to connect children and families with the power of plant based foods and where their food comes from and I think it is so important for children to learn this from an early age. Luckily Oscar is really interested in where things come from and what’s healthy and what isn’t so I knew he would enjoy it. FloraWe had a lovely breakfast and then listened to a short talk from the Flora team themselves, a dietician and the farmer who grows the crops for the oils that are used in the spreads. I couldn’t believe when Lucy, the dietician told us all that there are over 20,000 edible plant species and the average person only eats 20! This has made me Google and research to find out over edible plants that we can add to our diet. Getting Oscar to eat vegetables hasn’t always been the easy task that it is today and he would turn his noise up at certain fruit and veg. Teaching Oscar where vegetables come from and growing some at home in the garden ourselves has certainly made the child/veggy war so much easier. If you are going through the same vegetable battle as most parents then Flora are here to help! Flora wants to help us parents address this problem by running a fun and exciting programme of activities that will be rolled out over the course of the year for your children to get involved in.

The programme will begin with a dinosaur made entirely from plants. The Florasaurus, (Oscar loves the name) will show how many of the worlds most magnificent creatures were powered by plants. The giant beast will be touring around the UK to highlight the amazing power of plants and the simple plant based ingredients that go into Flora. If this won’t engage children I don’t know what will! Oscar cannot wait to go and see the Florasaurus!

Afterwards Oscar got the chance to make his own spread, which couldn’t have been easier. It really reinforced how Flora contains the simplest of ingredients which can be found in your kitchen cupboards. Each tub contains plant oils, such as sunflower, rapeseed and linseed oils. Oscar mixed the four simple ingredients and was very pleased with himself when he saw his spread at the end. He spread it on to some bread and loved the taste of it. We will definitely be making it again at home as he really enjoyed making it.

Flora is lower in saturated fats than butter and provides a source of healthy Omega 3 and 6. These essential fats contribute to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels and are also needed for normal growth and to support the development of our children. Oscar loves me adding a bit of spread on to his corn on the cob and it makes vegetables so much more tastier which again will make vegetables more appealing and tasty to kids.

As part of Flora’s commitment to promote plant based diets, they have launched Flora Freedom. This is a 100% dairy free product, which is free of preservatives, artificial colours and flavours, and like the rest of the Flora range is approved by The Vegetarian Society. I can honestly say It tastes amazing and if I didn’t know I would never have guessed that it is dairy free.

We had a great morning with Flora and they have certainly opened my eyes up to foods that are powered by plants and given me lot’s of fun ideas of how to improve our diet at home and top tips to teach Oscar where is food comes from. They also kindly gave us a goodie bag which had a sunflower seed kit inside which Oscar can’t wait to plant in the garden.

Vamousse – Protection Against Head Lice Review

The thought of catching head lice makes me itch, it is horrible! With Oscar now at school head lice is something he could pick up and bring home at any time. I have really long hair and quite a lot of it and catching head lice would just be a nightmare.

vamousse website logo

The last time I had head lice I was a child and I can vividly remember the strong smelling, itchy ointment that my Mum would put on my hair, then use a special comb to comb out the eggs. The thought if it is disgusting! So when Vamousse offered to send through some of their headlice treatments, I thought they would be so handy to keep in the bathroom cabinet just in case Oscar brought the dreaded lice home. The Vamousse treatment promises to kill 100% of lice AND their yucky eggs within 15 minutes of applying. The treatment itself comes in a can that has enough in it for one or two applications depending on the length and thickness of your hair. Having boys I guess it will last a bit longer, where as if I have to use it on my hair I would probably use the whole lot just to be on the safe side! The treatment itself is single use and is strong enough to do its job in one go so that you don’t have to retreat the hair a second time a week later. It comes in a convenient mousse format keeping mess to a minimum and also is so much easier to apply than an ointment. In the box is the Vamousse treatment mousse and the nit comb to go with it.

Vamousse

We also received the Vamousse protective shampoo to review which repels head lice. This was the answer to my prayers as I must say I am paranoid at baby groups and with Oscar being at school that I might catch it but using the protective shampoo eliminates this problem. I’ve been using it on all the kids ever since and so far, so good ! It leaves your hair feeling like a normal shampoo does, as I did think it might make my hair feel different but I was wrong. I found that after using I could blow dry and style my hair exactly the same.

You may have seen the fun Vamousse advert on the TV but they have also launched a free fun app that is available on Google Play and the App Store.

Vamousse treatments and shampoo are available in store and online in Superdrug, Boots, Sainsbury’s and all good independent pharmacies. The treatment is £14.99 for a 160ml can and the protective shampoo is £9.48 for a 200ml bottle.

The New PeeNut Nappy System From TotsBots

Displaying 14605-PEENUT_900px_RGB.JPG

In August we were asked if we would like to try out the new nappy system from TotsBots called PeeNut. Strangely only a few weeks before I had found out through my local council that they will send you a £100 worth of reusable nappies to help save the environment and I was sent a starter kit from TotsBots themselves. Tots Bots is a multi award winning brand and today are launching a completely unique new nappy system called PeeNut and they are  ‘Simply brilliant – in a nutshell’. The reason why I opted to switch to reusable nappies in the first place was that it can save you a whooping £750 by using reusable nappies compared to disposable ones. I never used them with Oscar so I did have some reservations about using them like that they would make masses of extra washing and wouldn’t be as quick and easy to use. Boy was I wrong! Let me tell you why….

So we were sent the brand new PeeNut Nappy system that launches today which consisted of four brightly coloured and great patterned wraps, 8 PeeNut pads and 100 flushable and biodegradable nappy liners. The nappy wraps come in fab colours and different patterns for baby boys, girls and unisex and are so soft on Archie’s skin. The wrap is a one size fits most (3.5-15 kilos or 7lb 11oz-33lb 1oz if you work in lbs and ounces like me). There is also an additional option size for tiny baby. They are completely waterproof and throughout the last four weeks since we started using them we have had no leaks at all even with Archie turning into a little wriggler and trying to get on the move. All you have to do is pop in the stay dry liner and you are ready to go. As I mentioned above I didn’t think they would be as quick and easy to use, in fact they are quicker to use. I simply open the nappy wrap, pop out the dirty or wet liner and pop in a fresh one then wipe clean the inside of the wrap just to give it a freshen up, add the disposable liner and do up the wrap. This also makes it easier to change nappies on the go and also when Archie was a sleep and needed changing before I went to bed so he is dry for a good nights sleep. I simply slide a few pads and the disposable liners into my changing bag and were are set for the day. I always carry one spare wrap just in case of any leakages but am pretty convinced after using them for a month that this won’t happen. The nappy wraps are slim fit, leak proof and most importantly economical!

Displaying PeeNut packaging.jpg

The pads themselves are really clever and well thought out by TotsBots as each pad can be popped in three different ways for light, medium or maximum absorbency which I think is great as obviously a newborn baby would need a light pad where as Archie being a weaned baby eating three meals a day and milk in between needs maximum. This is great and means you don’t have to buy pads that will only last you a couple of months before you need heavier ones, the PeeNut ones will last and grow with you baby. They are a real combination of performance and simplicity.  It is the complete nappy system from day-to-night, birth-to-potty system.  One PeeNut nappy system consists of 2 triple layer bamboo microfibre inserts and a waterproof wrap. When fitting the nappies on Archie they fit perfectly when adjusted to his size and our taylor made to him. They are also really comfortable for him to move around in. Another preconceived idea I had about reusable nappies was that they would be huge and look funny under Archie’s clothes. Once again I was wrong and they are just as noticeable as a disposable nappy, hardly noticeable at all.

So when it comes to washing them I have been soaking them in a bucket first then once they are clean although by using the disposable liners they stay fairly clean (from a no 2) and then I put them in a laundry bag then into the wash. Ideally to use the PeeNut system from birth to potty training you will need 16 pads so you will always have lot’s spare when the others are in the wash. You will also need about 8 nappy wraps, the disposable liners, laundry bag and a nappy bucket. Ultimately I haven’t even noticed a couple of extra washes so I was wrong in thinking they would make lot’s of extra washing.

I have been converted and feel good that they are better for Archie’s bottom, are saving us money and saving the environment. TotsBots have been making beautiful high quality reusable nappies since 2001 and have amazingly won more Mother and Baby Gold awards than all the other nappy brands put together! 🙂 I can see TotsBots winning lot’s of awards with their new PeeNut Nappy System, it is fab! 10 out of 10 from us!

Review: Lumie Bodyclock STARTER 30

With a six month old baby anything I can use to improve my sleep is more than welcome! When we were given the chance to review the Lumie body clock STARTER 30 I was intrigued to see how it would improve our sleep and how quickly it would adjust our body clock’s. The STARTER 30 is the most affordable Lumie light at only £59.95 and will introduce you to waking with light.

When our Lumie light arrived it was really easy to set up and looks really stylish on our bedside table. I simply entered the time, what time we wake up and whether we wanted a sound alarm or not and that was it. When we went to bed that night we pressed the button to alert the body clock that we were off to the land of nod and we went to sleep with the light’s fading sunset that lasts for thirty minutes and by then we were fast asleep.

I set our wake up time for 7am and the Lumie body clock then has a 30 minute sun rise light which helps to wake you up gradually which is much more natural and better for you then a shock wake up from your usual alarm clock! It wakes you gradually with increasing natural light. This is a signal for your body to ease production of sleep hormones (e.g. melatonin) and increase those that help you get up and go (e.g. cortisol). Wake-up lights help to keep your sleep cycle on track, boosting mood, energy and productivity levels all day.  What’s not to love! You can also set the light to dim throughout the night which I find really useful as I get up once in the night to feed Archie and I can also see him asleep in his cot next to my bed throughout the night. Below you can see how it actually works.

I was surprised how I felt just after using it for a few nights and I don’t know if it is a coincidence but Archie has slept through the night a few times since we have been using the body clock. I feel much more refreshed in the morning and to thoroughly test the sun rise feature I didn’t set an alarm at all and still woke up on time with just the light getting brighter. I am going to get another one to put in Oscar’s bedroom to see how he gets on with it too.
